DGOJ releases Q3 2023 report, Spanish revenue down 3%

The Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DJON), the Spanish Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling, has released its Q3 2023 statistics.

Total Q3 gross gambling revenue (GGR) totalled €304.3m ($332.3m), a decrease of 3% when compared to last quarter but an increase of 24% when compared year-on-year.

As for specific divisions, the casinos accounted for the largest contribution to GGR with €160m.

This meant it was 52% of overall GGR, a quarterly rise of 7% and yearly increase of 23%.

Live roulette increased 5% quarter-on-quarter and 28% year-on-year, while slots increased 8% quarterly and 26% annually, and blackjack increased 11% quarter-on-quarter.

Sports betting wasn’t too far behind with a GGR of €113m, signifying a decrease of 15% but an increase of 23% year-on-year.

Most individual markets also saw a decrease; pre-match betting fell 32% quarter-on-quarter, while in-play betting fell 0.3% and fixed odds horseracing fell 10%.

The only market that increased quarterly was general fixed-odds betting, which rose 46%. The next highest GGR was poker with €27m, which was an increase of 4% quarter-on-quarter and 22% annually.

Both poker tournaments and cash games increased across both timescales, with 31% and 2% yearly respectively.

The two lowest segments were bingo with €3.6m and contests sitting at €50,Table games000. Bingo increased 3% from the last quarter but was down 1% on Q3 2022, while contests fell 68% quarterly and rose 57% year-on-year.

However, the DJON noted that contests seem to fluctuate wildly year by year, with +58% in 2020, -91% in 2021 and -72% in 2022.

Deposits in the country were down 1% to €921.8m, although this was an improvement of 12% year-on-year.

On the other hand, withdrawals were down 3% to €615.9m, a figure up 8% yearly.

Marketing costs saw a similar trend, with the €93.3m total representing a decrease of 5% on last quarter but an increase of 12% on Q3 2022.

The number of new accounts was the only vertical in this section to report positives across both timescales, with 322,709 new sign-ups - a 5% increase quarterly and a 4% rise year-on-year.

The average number of active game accounts each month was 1.1 million and average monthly sign-ups was 107,570.
